AEP

It is the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)? What should I do?

August 07, 20241 min read

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is a time each year when people with Medicare can make changes to their Medicare coverage for the following year. The AEP period runs from October 15th through December 7th.

During this time, you can:

  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan or vice versa.

  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.

  • Enroll in a Part D prescription drug plan or change your existing Part D plan.

If you don't make any changes during AEP, your current coverage will automatically be renewed for the following year (as long as you pay your monthly premiums).

There are a few things to keep in mind when making changes to your Medicare coverage during AEP:

  • Any changes you make will take effect on January 1 of the following year.

  • If you switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to Original Medicare, you'll need to enroll in a Part D prescription drug plan if you want prescription drug coverage.

  • If you switch from Medicare Advantage to a Medigap (Medical Supplemental) plan, you may have to answer medical questions.

If you have any questions about your Medicare coverage or making changes during AEP, you can contact Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).

Why make changes to your Medicare coverage during AEP?

  • Your health needs have changed.

  • Your budget has changed.

  • You're unhappy with your current plan.

  • There are new plans available that better meet your needs.
